Strong partners, strong projects!

DEER – Decentralized redispatch with digital identities

In the DEER research project, we are working with Fraunhofer FIT, OFFIS, TenneT, DKE energy, be.storaged and ubimet to investigate how decentralized flexibility can be accessed from PV systems, battery storage systems or heat pumps below 100 kW in order to keep the power grid stable. We design the interfaces and communication processes between the device, aggregator and transmission system operators via a local agent. Self-sovereign identities (SSI) and blockchain interact for secure data exchange. With infrastructure for the field test and OLI Market, we build on experience from BMIL, Flexchain and BEST. The project is funded by the BMWK

GrECCo - Grid Sensitive Energy Community Coordination (GrECCo)

Balancing production and consumption locally is one of the goals of energy communities and, hence of OLI Market. In the GrECCo project, funded by BMWK, we are working with our partners at the University of Freiburg (INATECH & IMTEK), Offenburg University of Applied Sciences and Fraunhofer ISE to develop a grid-sensitive market mechanism for energy communities that solves congestions in the distribution grid and reduces the need for grid expansion. We control charging points for electric vehicles, heat pumps or stationary battery storage systems via standardized interfaces to take advantage of their flexibility. The blockchain supports secure data exchange. Field test partners are  Elektrizitätswerke Schönau

BEST – Blockchain-based decentralized energy market design

In the BEST research project, we are investigating how blockchain technology can best be used for local electricity trading, one of the applications of OLI Market. Together with our partners RLI, Fraunhofer FOKUS, fortiss, e-regio, Energieforen Leipzig and Weserbergland University of Applied Sciences, we are developing an electricity market bidding system (SMBS) as open-source software. The trading is fully automated and is intended to relieve the local power grid. Software determines local electricity demand and supply, coordinates both, and stores trades securely and traceably using a combination of trusted execution environments (TEE) and a blockchain.
We manage the software cluster for the SMBS, do testing it in the laboratory and with over 20 users. The project is funded by the BMWK

Flexchain - Unlocking small-scale flexibility potentials

Together with AWSI, Hager Group, VIVAVIS and Stadtwerke Saarlouis we are testing a trading platform for flexibility from households. Based on individual forecasts, they offer the temporary adjustment of their consumption or feed-in on a market platform and thus stabilize the distribution grid in the low-voltage range We ensure that flexibility trading with the network operator is verified and documented on a blockchain in a forgery-proof, transparent and data-saving manner. We compare different solutions with and without blockchain according to technical and economic criteria. Promising concepts will be included in OLI Market. The project is funded by BMWK

Blockchain Machine Identity Ledger (BMIL) mit dena

Together with the German Energy Agency – Deutsche Energieagentur (dena) and our partners GWAdriga, PPC, Spherity alsongside the Energy Web Foundation and KILT we develop machine identity ledgers for decentralized energy systems. The identities are created with the help of crypto-chips and lokal interfaces to our OLI-Boxes and afterwards transmitted through the trust anchor of the intelligent measuring system.

Blockchain infrastructure & consulting

For our customers we operate blockchain infrastructure in the form of (validator) nodes on various networks. This is done as a full service: registration, installation and token management including billing is completely taken over by us. At the same time, we keep our customers up to date with regular jour fixes – constantly informing about what is happening in the blockchain.

Blockchain Lab and Blockchain introductory course

There are several power generation plants and flexible loads on the grounds of the Institute for Energy Economy and Application Technology of the Technical University of Munich, which are to be connected to a blockchain for research purposes. In the first step, two generation plants and one flexible load are integrated. OLI Systems GmbH provides the hardware for this and trains the users regarding installation and development of Smart Contracts.

Cellular energy management system

In the project C / sells – pictorially speaking – a cellular structured energy system based on the course of the sun from Bavaria in the east to Baden-Württemberg to Hesse in the northwest should be created. As part of this project, OLI links decentralized producers, stores and consumers with a distributed energy management system based on Ethereum (permissioned blockchain) within a real estate on behalf of WIRCON GmbH. The goal is to optimize the energy flows within the real estate based on the available information (forecast, market data, plant data). On the hardware side, there is a focus on integrating smart meters including a gateway into the blockchain. In addition, we analyze the potential to increase flexibility and to be able to track into the superior regional cells. For this purpose, external equipment is integrated into the blockchain via the company’s own backbone.

Allgäu Microgrid

In a neighborhood in Kempten, the Allgäuer Überlandwerk implements a blockchain pilot – the Allgäu Microgrid. For this, three prosumer households with photovoltaic systems and two consumption only households were connected to an Ethereum-based blockchain. The market mechanism based on smart contracts enables block-based P2P trading. On the retail side, an app is provided which displays the current consumption. Further, the app allows the customer to set preferences and purchase prices for electricity in P2P trading and shows the results of the market clearing. OLI Systems supplies the necessary software and hardware for control.

Guarantees of origin from a wind turbine

In a wind turbine of Examesh a blockchain gateway for transparent proof of origin was installed. OLI Systems GmbH provides the hardware developed in cooperation with Görlitz AG, supports the installation and integrates the system into a smart contract for proof of origin with quarter-hour accuracy. On the consumer side as well, a blockchain gateway was installed on a battery storage in order to record the consumption of the guarantees of origin. As infrastructure, the “Volta” or “Tobalaba” test block chain is used, which is operated as a precursor to the actual Energy Web Chain.

Blockchain-Pilot Ludwigshafen

Asset-accurate billing with end customers

Combined Energy & Workflow Management in Hospitals

Together with OPASCA GmbH, OLI Systems develops and operates an energy management system which couples the management of patients with the operation of radiation therapy units. The system generates automated recommendations for action without compromising the quality of medical treatments. Energy expenses per patient can be reduced by more than 20%, the hospital can save around € 3.000 per year for each radiation therapy unit.
